Welcome to Middle C Music
Middle C Music is a music store and school located at 4530 Wisconsin Ave NW in Washington, DC, providing lessons for students of all ages and skill levels. Our mission is to teach, serve, and support musicians and music lovers all across the DMV.
Since opening in 1997, we have worked with hundreds of students, from beginners picking up their first instrument to more advanced musicians looking to refine their technique and prepare for performances. Today, Middle C serves approximately 480-500 students and remains the only full-service music store operating in the District of Columbia.
Our lessons focus on building strong musical foundations while keeping learning engaging and enjoyable. Students explore different instruments, develop their abilities at their own pace, and gain confidence through consistent practice and guidance from experienced instructors.
Whether someone is starting music for the first time, returning to an instrument after a break, or working toward a performance goal, our teachers are dedicated to helping each student grow and succeed.
Lessons we offer:
Piano
The piano is both approachable for young beginners and richly complex for advanced players, and is perfect for learning to read music and building a strong musical foundation.
Guitar & Ukulele
One of the foundational instruments of contemporary music, our guitar instructors teach across genres and will equip you to play for yourself or as part of a group.
Voice
The vocal instrument is a complex living system and healthy technique is the key to lifelong enjoyment. Let our instructors guide you on your journey of expression and discovery.
Violin & Viola
From classic to contemporary pieces, our instructors will help you master the bowing and finger technique needed to excel at playing the violin.
Cello
Cello lessons will help you to develop strong fundamentals and play without tension to create a clear and beautiful sound on this soulful instrument.
Drums & Percussion
Learn to play the drum kit and other percussion instruments. Create fun and complex beats while developing healthy technique.
Bass
The low pitch of the bass guitar holds down the groove in almost all styles of music. Learn to play different styles and techniques.
Brass
Learn how to play the trumpet, cornet, tuba, trombone and more. Private brass lessons are a great supplement to school music programs. Study your favorite genre with your teacher.
Woodwinds
Develop a beautiful sound on the saxophone, clarinet, oboe or flute. Study the musical style of your choosing with our highly qualified woodwind instructors.

By pairing professional instruction with a genuinely welcoming environment, we help every student build a lifelong relationship with music.
Our Story
Middle C Music was founded in 1997 with the goal of providing high-quality music instruction and instrument retail to the Washington, DC community. From the start, the school set out to be something different, not just a store, but a true neighborhood destination for musicians of all backgrounds and abilities.
What began as a local music shop has grown into one of the most recognized music schools and stores in the region, earning recognition as a NAMM Top 100 Dealer and building a reputation for outstanding staff and a one-of-a-kind community atmosphere. Over the years, Middle C has expanded its programs to include private lessons across a wide range of instruments, group classes for young children, summer camps, and regular performance opportunities for students.
Today, the school continues to grow while staying true to its original commitment to personalized instruction and a welcoming environment where every student feels at home.
Serving Families in Washington, DC
Middle C Music proudly serves students from across Washington, DC and the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Families visit from neighborhoods throughout the DMV, with a particular focus on the Northwest DC quadrant as well as Bethesda and Friendship Heights, MD.
Our location on Wisconsin Avenue, just steps from the Tenleytown/American University Red Line Metro stop, makes it easy for students throughout the area to access high-quality music instruction close to home.
Many of our students attend local schools including Jackson Reed High School, Hardy Middle School (Deal), Janney Elementary School, Georgetown Day School (GDS), and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Our programs are designed to complement and support students’ existing school music programs as well as their personal musical interests.
Whether you are looking for beginner lessons for a young child or advanced training for an adult musician, Middle C Music welcomes students from across the Washington, DC area.
Community Involvement
Middle C Music is proud to be an active part of the Washington, DC community. We regularly participate in local events and create opportunities for students and music lovers to come together around live music.
Middle C consistently puts on live performances outside the store for community events and supports local concert performances. The school donates to school auctions and community organizations, and has recently hosted events including a karaoke night and made charitable contributions to the Kosciuszko Foundation.
These experiences allow students to share what they are learning while building confidence performing in front of others, and they reflect our belief that music is meant to be part of community life, not just the classroom.
