Music Programs & Curriculum

How Our Music Programs Work?

At Middle C Music, our music programs are designed to help students develop musical skills in a way that is structured, supportive, and engaging.

Lessons are tailored to each student’s age, experience level, musical interests, and learning pace. Rather than following a rigid curriculum, instructors adapt their teaching approach to support the individual goals of each student. This flexible structure allows both children and adults to progress at a comfortable pace while continuing to enjoy learning music.

Students typically meet with their instructor on a weekly basis, building skills through consistent instruction and regular practice. Flexible scheduling is also available for students who cannot commit to a recurring weekly slot — however, one-off lessons cannot be booked more than two weeks in advance of the intended date.

Building Strong Musical Foundations

Developing strong musical fundamentals is an important part of learning any instrument.

During lessons, instructors help students gradually build the core skills that support long-term musical growth. Students may work on areas such as:

  • Understanding rhythm and timing
  • Developing listening skills
  • Improving coordination and technique
  • Learning how music is structured
  • Reading musical notation
  • Building confidence through practice and repetition

These foundational skills help students become more comfortable playing their instrument while preparing them to explore more advanced music.

Learning Through Songs and Repertoire

A major part of learning music comes from playing songs.

Students work on a variety of musical pieces that help them apply the skills they are developing during lessons. Instructors often select music that matches the student’s skill level, musical taste, and learning goals. This may include popular music, classical pieces, contemporary songs, and beginner exercises designed to strengthen technique.

Learning music helps students enjoy and keeps lessons motivating and encourages consistent practice.

Personalized Instruction

Every student learns differently. Middle C Music instructors adjust their teaching methods based on how each student learns best.

Lessons may include a combination of technique development, music theory concepts, ear training, sight reading, and performance preparation. This individualized approach allows students to progress steadily while building confidence in their musical abilities.

Programs for Different Ages and Skill Levels

Middle C Music welcomes students at many stages of their musical development — from young children to adult learners.

Private lessons are available for students ages 6 and up. Lessons are adapted to match the needs and goals of each age group.

For younger students, lessons often focus on building enthusiasm for music, developing coordination and listening skills, and learning basic musical concepts. Older students and adults may focus on improving technique, expanding repertoire, preparing for performances, and exploring different musical styles.

Early Childhood Programs (Ages 3–5)

Middle C Music offers two group programs for young children who are not yet ready for private lessons:

Children’s Ukulele Classes A 30-minute weekly group class for children ages 3½–5. Students learn strum patterns, simple chords, dynamics, music listening skills, and basic note-reading in a fun, relaxed environment. Each session runs 6 weeks and costs $240. Students must have completed at least 6 months of preschool before participating.

Piano with Friends A 30-minute weekly group class for children ages 4½–5½. Students learn to play simple songs while developing keyboard skills, note reading, rhythm, and music terminology through games and singing. Each session runs 4 weeks and costs $160. Class size is limited to 3 students.

Both programs are taught on Saturdays. Contact Middle C Music at (202) 244-7326 or info@middlecmusic.com for current session dates and enrollment.

Performance Opportunities

Performance is an important part of musical development, and participation is optional but encouraged.

Students have opportunities to participate in recitals and performance events where they can share what they have learned. Recitals are held on average twice per year per teacher. Additional performance opportunities — including adult recitals and outdoor performances, take place periodically throughout the year.

These events help students gain confidence performing in front of others, develop stage presence, and celebrate their musical progress.

Instruments and Lesson Types

Middle C Music offers instruction for a wide variety of instruments and musical interests. Private lessons are available for:

  • Piano
  • Guitar & Ukulele
  • Voice
  • Violin & Viola
  • Cello
  • Drums & Percussion
  • Bass
  • Brass (trumpet, cornet, tuba, trombone, and more)
  • Woodwinds (saxophone, clarinet, oboe, flute, and more)

Both in-person and virtual (online) lessons are available. Programs include beginner instruction through intermediate and advanced study, as well as performance preparation.

Supporting Practice at Home

Progress in music happens both during lessons and through regular practice at home.

Each instructor provides their own practice routines and assignments tailored to the individual student — the school does not follow one single prescribed method. Practice typically includes reviewing songs learned in lessons, working on technique exercises, listening to music for inspiration, and developing rhythm and timing skills.

Parents of younger students are encouraged to support their child’s practice routine at home to reinforce what is learned during lessons.

Getting Started

Students interested in lessons can begin with an introductory lesson to meet an instructor and experience how lessons work.

During the introductory lesson, students can discuss their musical interests, try the instrument, review their skill level, and receive guidance on next steps. This helps ensure students are matched with the right instructor and program.
