Our Approach to Drum Lessons
We fully acknowledge that each aspiring drummer is a unique individual. While it is true that everyone must begin in the same place, where you go from there is completely up to you. The flexible style of our instructors will foster your musical creativity, offering wisdom, and guiding your technique to levels of excellence. While creative expression is strongly encouraged, we incorporate certain features across the board for all our students, especially in the beginning phases of instruction.
At the Brill Music Academy, we provide instructors who are patient and skilled at teaching students of widely varying ages, experience levels and personalities.
Our Approach to Drum Lessons
GET STARTED01 Drum Lessons Should Be Fun!
Few things in life are more satisfying than sitting down at a set of drums and playing your heart out. Students will find this unbridled joy in drum lessons at Brill Music Academy, as fun is the centerpiece of our teaching philosophy. We want our students to LOVE that feeling, whether it’s their first or five-hundredth time on the throne (and yes, it’s really called that!).
Whether your interest in the drums is currently an individual pursuit or you’re already part of a band or ensemble, Brill Music Academy’s passionate instructors are ready to help you progress quickly toward your goals while having fun doing it!
02 We Emphasize Healthy Technique
Students at Brill Music Academy can count on well-rounded instruction, rooted in proper technique. Working with a professional instructor, you will begin to master the fundamentals of drumming: a strong sense of pulse, how to control touch and tone, well-rounded drum vocabulary, ergonomic drum set configuration, good posture, healthy wrist action, four-limb independence, and efficient sticking patterns.
We strive to ensure that all of our drum students have a rich and varied lesson experience and become literate musicians. Students will be immersed in essential elements of music theory including rhythm and notation, and will gain exposure to the rich history of percussion.
03 We Care About Your Musical Interests
Our teachers pride themselves on helping you discover new ways of connecting with the instrument while also working on music you know and love. The world of drumming is wide and deep – but through our tailored instruction, we help you reach your goals, whatever they may be.
Are you a member of a jazz ensemble? We’ll focus on swinging, dynamics, chart reading, and how to “kick” the band. Is your band hoping to be the next big country/rock/pop act? We’ll focus on playing with power, steady grooving, and bread-and-butter fills. Perhaps you desire to be a virtuosic drummer who can move in and out of all sorts of styles? We’ll help you identify the similarities and differences between them and navigate the precise skills needed for each.
Our Drum Teachers:
Here at Brill Music Academy, we thrive on creating a fun, engaging, and well-rounded experience for each student. Within the drumming world, there are many musical styles ranging from rock to jazz and pop to country. Whatever your preferred genre, we have a teacher that will work for you. Our qualified instructors often participate in public performance and possess significant academic credentials. Their experience enables them to customize their instruction for each student, covering areas including technique, fundamentals and expression.

What is the minimum age to start drum lessons at Brill Music Academy?
Children aged seven and older, plus teens and adults of all ages, may take drum lessons at Brill Music Academy. We suggest a minimum age of seven because that’s when children generally can recognize and create patterns, hold drum sticks and sit on the throne properly, and concentrate during 30-minute lessons and practice sessions. For children under five, we recommend piano lessons, which give children a solid foundation in musical theory and enrichment.
Do I need any prior experience?
The drum instructors at Brill Music Academy specialize in teaching students of all experience levels. We welcome you to take drum lessons if you’re brand new to the drums and if you have intermediate or advanced skills.
Do I have to know how to read music?
No. Beginners are welcome! Our lesson plans aim to educate, engage and inspire students.
What styles of drums can I learn?
Our drum teachers tailor lessons to each student’s interests, needs, and goals. That means you get to have fun as you learn and play the music you like. We also introduce you to a variety of styles as we help you expand your repertoire and hone your skills.
What materials will I need?
Talk with your instructor before you buy a full-sized drum set. We will recommend the exact type of drums, method books, and online resources you need to support your customized lessons. Also, it’s common for beginner students to learn on a rubber practice pad with a pair of sticks, making drums an economical instrument to master.
Are drums the right fit for me?
With drum skills, you can join a band, orchestra or jazz group, or play for your personal pleasure. Playing the drums can also help you play other instruments better and improve your songwriting abilities. Most importantly, drum lessons at Brill are fun. If you enjoy keeping rhythm, moving your entire body, expressing yourself through movement, and expanding your talents, drums could be a good fit for you. If you still have questions or concerns about drum lessons or the instrument itself, please contact us.
