WHAT TO EXPECT AT VELOCITY
Music and Methods
At Velocity, students are assigned books and materials based on their level, goals, and individualized needs. All of our teachers may incorporate classical repertoire, contemporary pieces, rhythm exercises, music theory and technique into each student’s customized lesson plans. All books/music and other materials assigned to students must be paid for in full before leaving Velocity Music Academy.
Exciting Opportunities that we provide to all students:
- December and May Formal Recitals
- Annual “Pops” Recital
- Halloween, Coffee Shop, and Beginner’s Recitals
- Annual Velocity Festival
- Spring Masterclass
- Music Development Program Assessment Opportunities
- Enrichment Classes and Opportunities for music-making with friends
Students taking private lessons may register for 30, 45, or 60 minute weekly private lessons at Velocity. The length of the lesson is determined by the student’s age and level. If you prefer a group setting, group classes are offered in First Steps in Piano (ages 4-6), Elementary Group piano, Beginning Piano for Adults, and Beginning Guitar for Adults. Lessons are also offered on site at Hill Country Christian School and through the after school enrichment programs in select LISD elementary campuses. We have an open door policy — parents are welcome to visit and observe lessons at any time.
Recitals and other performance events
Recitals are offered in November and May. Recital participation is optional, however the recital fee is a mandatory yearly fee. Only currently enrolled students taking private lessons are allowed to participate in recitals. Group classes have recitals during class time.
Festivals, masterclasses, and other events are also available at Velocity and throughout the greater Austin area. In addition to our main recitals each year, Velocity provides students the opportunity to perform in a Pops Recital with a professional rhythm section (guitar, bass and drums) and smaller recitals such as a Halloween recital and Beginner’s only recital. Each May, Velocity hosts the Music Development Program, a rigorous international standard curriculum and assessment.
We know that it is crucial to have a quality instrument for home practice. If you need help with acquiring an instrument, please inquire with our office staff about our instrument sales (piano, violin, & guitar) and/or our referrals to local music stores in the Austin and Cedar Park area.
Music lessons run year round and your tuition covers 48 lessons. Tuition is divided equally over 12 months.
We do not follow a traditional school calendar and there are many dates that we are open when school is out. We will be closed for the week of Spring Break.
We are always closed on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. We are partially closed during Thanksgiving (Wednesday-Saturday) and the winter holiday (exact dates determined by the Christmas and New Year dates)
Pick up and Drop off – the safety of your children
No one is available to watch your children before and after lessons. Please arrange drop-off and pick-up accordingly, and/or remain in the building while your children are taking lessons. Please supervise children in the waiting room. Velocity Music Academy is not responsible for the safety of your child before or after their regularly scheduled lesson times. This includes, but is not limited to: early drop off, late pick-up, or arriving at the academy at an incorrect lesson time.
Parents are responsible for scheduling regular practice times at home, optimally 4-7 days per week. It is important to supervise practice during the first year of study, and for younger students (ages 5-8.) Teachers will provide a detailed list of what to practice during the week. Parents are welcome at any time to sit in on lessons to observe what the student is learning. If you have any questions about practicing, please discuss the issues with your child’s teacher during their lesson.
Out of respect to others, please do not bring your child to the studio if they display signs of a contagious illness. We reserve the right to send any sick student home.
We’d love to arrange an online/virtual lesson for students who are too sick to come to the studio but feel well enough to have a lesson. Just contact our front desk to arrange an online lesson during your regular lesson time.
Withdrawing from lessons
A 2 week notice before the next billing cycle (always the 1st of each month) is required to discontinue lessons. To discontinue lessons, you must email firstname.lastname@example.org. A student may be dismissed for: repeated failure to attend lessons, behavior or attitude problems, or nonpayment of tuition.
There will be no refunds for tuition after it has been paid on the 1st of the month.
Velocity Music Academy is hereby granted permission to take photographs and videos of students to use in online and print promotional materials. Last names are never published. If you would not like for your child’s pictures to be used in our materials, please inform us in writing.
