Our Approach to Violin & Viola Lessons
Study a string instrument with our expert teachers at Velocity Music Academy. Our teachers all hold university degrees in music, and structure private lessons around the student – working through repertoire from beginning to advanced levels.
Children can begin studying string instruments at the age of 4. Many of our students participate in other orchestral opportunities in the greater Austin area. Contact us to learn more about our strings program!
Viola and Violin Lessons Should Be Fun!
The only thing sweeter than the sound of a violin or viola is the experience students will have at Velocity Music Academy. We pair the sophistication of these classic string instruments with an unwavering commitment to fun. We want each of our students to LOVE their music lessons!
Our teaching staff expertly blends a high standard of music education with a creative, student-focused approach that gives students space to discover and nurture their passion for music and the violin. Whether you’re looking to pick up the instrument for the first time or want to earn the first chair in your orchestra, our teachers are ready to help you progress quickly toward your goals – while having fun along the way.
We Emphasize Healthy Technique
Strong fundamentals are key to efficient, effortless playing and optimal sound. We teach students essential instrument care and set-up, tuning, healthy playing posture, bowing, and hand positioning. Our skilled instructors also take students through regular ear training exercises to foster the development of good pitch.
Additionally, we strive to ensure our students become literate musicians through lessons in scales, music theory, rhythm, and sight-reading. More advanced students will build a broader repertoire of technique, including vibrato, double-stop and chord playing; more advanced bow strokes such as spiccato, sautillé, and up-bow staccato; and other higher-level musicianship concepts such as phrase analysis and score studying skills.

What’s a Good Age to Begin Violin or Viola Lessons?
Children can begin studying violin as young as ages 4 or 5, but we welcome students of all ages, including adults!
Even so, not all 5-year-olds are ready to begin violin lessons. Whether your child is ready for lessons depends on a variety of factors including physical development, dexterity, and attention span. If you’re not sure, we are happy to consult with you and help determine if your child is ready to start.
While children make up a good percentage of our student roster, we also love to work with adults. There is no such thing as being too old to learn an instrument!
If you have the desire to learn, we have the desire to teach you—no matter your age.

Ulrich is a fabulously patient teacher! We enjoy the time he invests in teaching our daughter and we are enrolling our other kids in classes because of the great, positive experience Cayli has had at Velocity.J. Cecil
So, my experience is be sure to have a teacher that your kids have “fun” with. If you start out hard core with someone who “raps on their knuckles”(euphemism) they can lose interest quickly. Make sure the teacher plays games with them and uses “apps” to engage their interest where they can write their own songs, etc…. Most importantly – have a teacher that lets them play familiar songs and can write simple music to popular songs they know. This will ensure they are engaged with the process and hopefully maintain their interest. It’s not until they realize they can play “actual” music that they really begin to enjoy it so “fun and engaging” from the get go is key. Beethoven can come once they’ve mastered the basics and have a love for making music happen. We love Kathy Rabago at Velocity Music.M. A.
I wanted to ping you to let you know how pleased I am with G.’s progress under Tom’s teaching. Tom’s very skilled and engaging and G. is blossoming as a student – he lovs guitar and counts the days between his lessons.
Thank you!J. J.
We love velocity. The facility is always very welcoming and chearful. My 3 y.o. Enjoys the music together sessions. I feel like it’s encouraging him to develop a love of music and even helping with his rhythm in gross motor skills. Shane is teaching my 6 y.o. Beginning piano. He’s very patient and adaptive to meet her needs depending on the day. I really appreciate how kind and courteous he is and how he makes things easy for her to understand and practice. We are definitely happy we chose velocity!Marti Smith
