About Henry Sun
At a naive, young age, I inherited an ancient relic known as a portable CD player, and, in bewitchment by it, set out to become a rockstar and a classical composer. I soon picked up the guitar (classical, acoustic, electric) and piano, and continued falling into the rabbit hole of exploring music daily. Unsurprisingly, the fame part did not pan out, but along the way I’ve gained the joys of always learning, improving, and refining, not just for music but also myself as a person and all endeavors of interest that I pursue in life.
If we analogize music as another language, then music compositions are the literature, and the musician is the actor. It is the role of musician to convey the story, emotions and thoughts contained in the musical script and eloquently bring it all to life. In the same way that literature should be read both thoughtfully and viscerally, as too should music, with fluency, intellect and creativity.
Because I learned the joys of exploring all musical genres, I try to have the same openness to most other aspects of my life. Be it through books, TV shows, movies, games, etc., I enjoy both the wholesomely upbeat and the morbidly depressing, and all in between – drama, comedy, romance, horror, fantasy, etc. The same goes for food; I like to try cuisines from all over the world; I fillet my own fish, make sashimi, and sharpen my own kitchen knives. I wish to instill the same curiosity and openness to my students, indirectly by trying to reveal to them how enriching music can be.
