How Long Should Lessons Be?

Students 5-7 years old should start with 30-minute weekly lessons.
Students 8-11 years old usually start with 45-minute weekly lessons depending on developmental readiness.
Students 12-adults should start with 45 or 60-minute weekly lessons.

How Long Should I Practice?
Student’s daily practice should be about the length of their weekly lesson. Your teacher may recommend a longer lesson as the student improves or learns how to practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it cost more to do virtual lessons?

No there is no price difference between virtual or in-studio lessons. It is completely up to you.

What if I just want 1 or 2 lessons a month?

We have a single lesson program just for you. We find that adult students sometimes sign up for single lessons. Most of our clients take a weekly lesson so they can enjoy the monthly program discounted pricing.

Do I need a piano for piano lessons?

Yes. It is really important to have a piano so that students can develop proper technique, be able to develop a wide dynamic range (volume), and learn how to work with a real piano to create beautiful music. While it certainly is wonderful to be able to practice on a grand piano, baby grand or upright pianos work as well. If you are worried about cost, there are companies in Orange County that rent pianos at a reasonable price. If you have a keyboard, it is acceptable for the first 2-3 months. Please review our keyboard suggestions before purchasing. (link coming) After that, please be prepared to make the investment of buying or renting a piano.

What is the parent’s role for lessons?

The very best students have parents who are actively involved in their children’s music education. For the younger students between ages 5-7 years old, it is really important to have an adult that is willing to stay during lessons to understand what is being assigned so practice at home can be the most effective. For students ages 7-10, it is important to have a parent at home that helps the student establish a habit of practicing. Depending on the student, parent involvement in the lesson and practice at home can be extremely beneficial. For ages 11+ years old, parent involvement is dependent on the student. For all ages, it is beneficial to have a person or parent that is helping the student keep a consistent habit of practicing. We find that succesful students have a set time to practice Monday through Friday.

Are you authorized to do Certificate of Merit?

Yes! Sign-ups are in the Fall, and testing is done usually near the end of February and beginning of March. If you are interested in Certificate of Merit, the best time to let the teacher know is in the August or early September.

Do you ONLY teach classical music?

No! We teach many different styles. While much of our personal training has been in classical music, we also pull from other genres including folk, musical theater, contemporary music and more. Our owners are passionate about having a textbook (music book) to study from to ensure you are growing and progressing. If you are good at practicing we can supplement the textbook with student choice materials.

Do you teach adults?

Yes! Adults are welcome. If you are interested in piano lessons for yourself, keep in mind that piano lessons are not a once-a-week commitment. The most important part of piano lessons is the practice you do at home. If you are considering lessons, make sure that you are ready to invest the time it takes to learn piano. Consistent practice yields the fastest results.

What if my child is sick?

If your lesson is less than 24 hours away, just send us an email or leave us a voicemail. If you feel good enough for a virtual lesson, that is usually the best option. If that doesn’t work, we can ask your teacher to make a short 2-5 minute video to tell you what to work on for next week. Please understand if it is less than 24 hours, we still pay the teacher for that time even if you are a no-show.

What is the $5 monthly recital Fee?

We produce 5-7 recitals a year. The great things about our recitals is that they are free to attend! Find more details in our studio policies.

How do I get my student to practice?

The best thing you can do for your student is to include a regular practice time in their daily routine. Our owners encourage all their students to set a practice alarm on their device where they have their assignments. Our new Glee practice app, Tonara, allows the parent to see exactly how much your student is practicing. With gamification inside the app they receive stickers and even progress through levels the more they practice.
