How Long Should Lessons Be?

Students 5-7 years old should start with 30-minute weekly lessons.
Students 8-11 years old usually start with 45-minute weekly lessons depending on developmental readiness.
Students 12-adults should start with 45 or 60-minute weekly lessons.

How Long Should I Practice?
Student’s daily practice should be about the length of their weekly lesson. Your teacher may recommend a longer lesson as the student improves or learns how to practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it cost more to do virtual lessons?

No there is no price difference between virtual or in-studio lessons. It is completely up to you.

What if I just want 1 or 2 lessons a month?

We have a Single Lesson program as well as a 5 Lesson Package specifically designed for adults. We know finding a weekly time for a busy, working adult to come in on a weekly basis can be challenging. The Single Lesson program and the 5 Lesson Package may be just what you need! Our knowledgable, friendly office Admins will be able to guide you to find Lesson Plan that fits best for your needs.

Do I need a piano for piano lessons?

Yes. It is really important to have a piano so that students can develop proper technique, be able to develop a wide dynamic range (volume), and learn how to work with a real piano to create beautiful music. While it certainly is wonderful to be able to practice on a grand piano, other options such as a baby grand or upright piano work just as well. If you have a keyboard, it is acceptable for the first 2-3 months. Please speak to your teacher about the best recommendations in keyboards or digital piano options so that you will have the best results possible from your Piano Lessons and at-home-practice.

What is the parent’s role for lessons?

The very best students have parents who are actively involved in their children’s music education. For the younger students between ages 5-7 years old, it is really important to have an adult that is willing to stay during lessons to understand what is being assigned so practice at home can be the most effective. For students ages 7-10, it is important to have a parent at home that helps the student establish a habit of practicing. Depending on the student, parent involvement in the lesson and practice at home can be extremely beneficial. For ages 11+ years old, parent involvement is dependent on the student. For all ages, it is beneficial to have a person or parent that is helping the student keep a consistent habit of practicing. We find that succesful students have a set time to practice Monday through Friday.

Are you authorized to do Certificate of Merit?

Yes! Sign-ups are in the Fall, and testing is done usually near the end of February and beginning of March. If you are interested in Certificate of Merit, the best time to let the teacher know is in the August or early September.

Do you ONLY teach classical music?

No! We teach many different styles. We believe in having a solid base for your Piano training. Our teachers use a curriculum that starts the same for all beginners, then as the student progresses, and the teacher gets to know what they like, the curriculum can become tailored to meet their needs and likes. Be sure you always communicate with your teacher about what you are looking for, and your teacher will work with you to meet your goals.

Do you teach adults?

Yes! Adults are welcome. If you are interested in piano lessons for yourself, keep in mind that piano lessons are not a once-a-week commitment. The most important part of piano lessons is the practice you do at home. If you are considering lessons, make sure that you are ready to invest the time it takes to learn piano. Consistent practice yields the fastest results.

What if my child is sick?

If your lesson is less than 24 hours away, just send us an email or leave us a voicemail. If you feel good enough for a virtual lesson, that is usually the best option. If you are unable to do a Virtual, we can ask your teacher to make a short 2-5 minute video to tell you what to work on for next week. Please understand if it is less than 24 hours, if you do not call and tell us you are sick, and show up anyway, you may be sent home. Please communicate with our Office Admins via text or phone if you or your child is feeling unwell. Respect your teachers, and fellow students. When in doubt, stay home, and let the office know as soon as possible.

How do I get my student to practice?

The best thing you can do for your student is to include a regular practice time in their daily routine. We encourage all our students to set a practice alarm on their device where they have their assignments. The Muzie.live account that you will be given after beginning a lesson subscription, allows the parents and teachers to see exactly how much the student is practicing. Talk to your teacher and our Admin staff about our Practice Rewards!
