Our Approach To Guitar Lessons
Why Choose Guitar Lessons at Hoffman School of Music?
Our teachers make taking guitar lessons fun. We do this by tailoring our lessons to each individual student. We don’t make you learn classical fingerpicking if what you really want is to play like Jimi Hendrix. By using the music you love to teach you how to play guitar, we make learning easier and more enjoyable.
This is not a shortcut. It is a deliberate teaching philosophy built on what actually keeps students engaged long enough to develop lasting skills. Technique sticks when it is learned in the context of a song a student cares about. Chord shapes practiced in isolation, for most students, are forgotten by the following week.
When a chord transition needs to be smoother, that is when we drill it. When a student needs cleaner single-note lines, that is when we address it. The result is a student who practices because they want to, not because they have been told to.
How Guitar Lessons Work at Hoffman School of Music?
Lessons run 30, 45, or 60 minutes, are scheduled weekly, and are available for students aged 5 and older. You choose a time slot, and it is yours throughout the year. Hoffman is a year-round school, so there are no gaps in progress over the summer.
Our teachers work tirelessly to inspire their students, and you will quickly see results from your dedication and hard work. Many of our students go on to study music in school and become professional musicians, but even the ones who don’t look back on their time at Hoffman School of Music fondly and remember it as a place of welcoming encouragement.
Enrollment is ongoing; you can start learning at any time. Contact us with questions, or sign up online today for guitar lessons, or lessons in piano, violin, ukulele, drums, or voice.

Questions
GET STARTED
How long until I can play a recognizable piece?
Most beginners at Hoffman play a short, recognizable melody in their first session. More complete songs typically take 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the piece and how regularly you practice at home.
Do I need a guitar at home?
You need regular access to a guitar to make consistent progress. Your teacher can advise on a starter model – acoustic or electric – that fits your goals and budget at your first lesson.
Should I start on acoustic or electric guitar?
Start on the guitar that excites you. Acoustic makes sense if your goals are folk, country, or singer-songwriter. Electric makes sense if the tone is part of what draws you to the instrument. Both are equally valid starting points and our teachers are experienced in both.
What styles of music do you teach?
Whether you want to play rock, folk, blues, pop, classical, or fingerstyle guitar, we offer lessons to match your goals. Every lesson is customized to your style and skill level.
Do I need to know how to read music?
No. Reading music is not the first step. At Hoffman, students play real songs first. Notation follows naturally once there is a reason to use it.
Do lessons continue year-round or follow a school calendar?
Hoffman is a year-round music school, so your lesson time slot is held throughout the year. The studio is closed on most national holidays and school breaks, and those closures are already built into the flat monthly subscription fee, with no surprises on your bill.
What happens if I need to miss a lesson?
If you cancel at least 24 hours in advance, you receive a make-up lesson credit valid for 30 days. Make-up lessons can be scheduled with any teacher at the studio, though your own teacher is recommended for continuity. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice do not qualify for a credit.
What if our family has multiple kids who want lessons?
Families with three or more active subscriptions receive a $10 per month discount on each subscription. Lessons are available for students aged 3 and older, so siblings at different stages can all be enrolled.
Can my child switch instruments if their interests change?
Yes. Students can transfer to a different instrument or a different teacher within Hoffman without any penalty. Transfers are arranged through the studio’s customer care team.
Do you hold recitals?
Yes, we do! The studio encourages bringing as many guests as you like.
Is there a referral program?
Yes. If you refer another family to Hoffman, a $30 credit is applied to your account once they enroll. You can redeem it by calling or emailing the studio with both family names.
