Staff

Here at At Your Door Music, our seasoned staff of piano instructors thrives on creating a fun, engaging, and well-rounded experience for each student. Within the keyboarding world, there are many musical styles ranging from classical to jazz, and pop to sacred. Whatever your preferred genre (or if you like a little of everything), we have a teacher that will work for you. Our qualified instructors often participate in public performance and possess significant academic credentials. Their experience enables them to customize their instruction for each student, covering areas including technique, fundamentals and expression.

Our Approach

We fully acknowledge that each aspiring pianist is a unique individual. While it is true that everyone must begin in the same place, where you go from there is completely up to you. The flexible style of our instructors will foster your musical creativity, offering wisdom, and guiding your technique to levels of excellence. While creative expression is strongly encouraged, we incorporate certain features across the board for all our students, especially in the beginning phases of instruction.

We Teach the Fundamentals

To properly understand the piano, students must receive instruction in several crucial areas of basic knowledge. Music theory, sight reading, keyboard layout, and hand positioning are all aspects of keyboarding that students must learn if they want to progress in their piano studies. Our teaching staff is knowledgeable in all these subjects and can assist you in your personal mastery.

The practice of fingering and scales is also key in truly mastering the piano. Becoming proficient in these fundamentals will make a huge difference to your future performance quality.

We Teach Proper Technique

Piano technique is the ability to get the piano to say what you want it to say. Once the fundamentals are in place, you and your teacher can begin really thinking about what you want to convey through the music itself. Our qualified teachers will assist you in exploring nuance through dynamics, pausing, phrasing and varying tempos.

Technique also includes the physical mechanics of playing the instrument. Proper technique will encourage a relaxed posture. Learning to relax as you play is a key goal our teachers encourage in every student. Your teacher will help you develop proper technique to safeguard you from injury, while simultaneously developing a strong musical foundation.

We Tailor Instruction to Your Goals

There is no one-size-fits-all method of piano instruction. While fundamentals and technique are essential, the goal is to reach a point where you can freely explore your own personal musical style. We encourage students to give input on their repertoire, and we encourage each pianist to step outside their comfort zone and try something new.

Our teachers need to know what your musical goals are so they can tailor instruction to reach them. Once they understand where you want to go, your teacher can craft a plan to get there that is unique to you. If you put in the effort, communicate with your instructor and strive to enjoy the keyboarding process, you will progress swiftly.

What’s a Good Age to Begin Piano Lessons?

Certain aspects of piano technique, such as interval reach, can be physically challenging to a young child. At the same time, there are plenty of basics to learn before large interval reach is necessary. At Your Door Music suggests beginning instruction no younger than age six. Have no fear: beginning at this young age will give your child plenty of time to progress in their keyboarding skills.

While children make up a good percentage of our student roster, we also love to work with adults. There is no such thing as being too old to learn to play piano. It has no age limit!

So, if you have the desire to learn, we have the desire to teach you—no matter your age.

What Makes At Your Door Music Unique?

First, our specialized music school employs multiple teachers in most areas of instruction. Your piano teacher should be someone that you resonate with on a personal, musical, academic level. Whatever your preferences, we can find a fit for you.

Secondly, our instructors have a fun, collaborative style that will inspire you and involve you in the decision-making process. The ideal teacher/student relationship is one in which the student can realize their musical goals. At Your Door Music teachers are fully equipped to assist you in every aspect of your musical development.

Thirdly, our convenience cannot be beaten. Unlike most music schools, our teachers come directly to your home at a time that is most convenient for you. In the comfort of your own space, you will feel safe to create, explore and imagine. This hour-long, in-home lesson format is invaluable to those whose lives are constantly on the go. Our desire is to remove the potential burdens that often come with extracurricular activities.

So, What Are You Waiting For?

If you’re ready to jump into the world of keyboarding, we are excited to match you with a teacher that can get you started on your musical journey. Nothing will enable you to progress more effectively than a one-on-one partnership with an inspiring piano professional. Let us help you explore and build your abilities in a setting that is comfortable for you. You never know how far you can go until you take that first step, so why not get started today?

  • Elizabeth is very much enjoying her lessons. After a couple years of piano lessons at [another music school] she finds this so refreshingly fun and she really looks forward to her lessons. Consequently, she practices more and is having more fun. Dave has just the right combination of kindness and seriousness to teach her.

    E.P.
  • Your instructors really are friendly and enthusiastic. They’ve been great about working with my kids to find out what kind of music they want to play.

    A.A.
  • Aidan has gained a new lease on his musical life since enrolling with AYDM. I never have to remind him to practice. He just does it on his own without any prompting. In this busy household with four kids, that’s huge. His teacher has figured out Aidan’s music interests and taken it from there and that seems to have helped keep Aidan’s interest going. We’re very pleased.

    A.J.
  • Both my husband and I are in a service business and we continue to be very impressed with how you run AYDM. You are so attentive to detail and provide excellent service. Very impressive!

  • At Your Door Music is simply the best music lesson option, bar none, in metro Boston. You have met and exceeded our expectations over the years with both of our children. On top of that you are perhaps the most professional organization I have ever dealt with for children’s activities & lessons. We will continue to recommend you and wish you every success!
