Our tremendously skilled teachers have the training (many have studied at Berklee) and real-world experience you’d want in a teacher. Whatever style of guitar you want to learn—from folk to jazz to classical to rock and pop—At Your Door Music can deliver.

We take a well-rounded approach to music instruction. Whatever your goals, we start by teaching proper technique and fundamentals, developing the student into a well-rounded guitarist and musician. And we do all of this in the comfort of your own home.

Our Approach to Guitar Lessons

A unique quality of the guitar is its versatility. Guitars are used in many styles and can be found all over popular and commercial music. They’re also ubiquitous in folk music across dozens of world cultures. And they appear on the finest classical concert stages, played by tuxedoed professionals backed by symphony orchestras.

With this many directions for guitarists to go in, it’s easy to see how approaches to teaching the instrument can differ greatly. Our teachers cater the lesson to each individual student’s needs while ensuring proper fundamental skills are being mastered.

We Teach the Fundamentals

Beyond proper technique, there’s a whole world of music literacy at your fingertips. At Your Door Music believes every musician can benefit from learning the fundamentals of music, including basic music theory and literacy, rhythm instruction, and music history.

These fundamental skill areas will make you a more well-rounded musician and better position you for future opportunities or learning additional instruments.

As a guitar student with At Your Door Music, you will learn how to read all standard forms of guitar music (tablature, standard notation, lead sheets, and so on).

We Teach Proper Technique

Basic proper technique is the same for guitarists across lines of genre or style. This is why we start our beginning students by developing a solid foundation of technical skills. Whether your goals include learning to play jazz, metal, classical, or playing in your church’s band, you’ll need to start with the essentials:

  • Proper picking technique
  • Proper strumming technique
  • Proper fretting technique
  • Standard fingering for basic guitar chords

While sites like YouTube can be amazing resources for those seeking to learn more about the guitar, learning proper technique from an experienced teacher provides many advantages, including live and direct feedback, reduced incidence of injury, and improved technical proficiency. Cultivating good playing habits will serve you well as you progress in your musical journey!

We Tailor Instruction to Your Goals

Instruction for beginning students includes learning proper technique and the basics of music fundamentals. Once the student reaches a certain level of proficiency in these areas, methods of instruction will diverge and your teacher will help chart a path that aligns with your goals.

If you want to be a singer/songwriter, you’ll focus on the skills and styles most common in that discipline, as well as learning to sing while playing (and do both well at once). If you’re more interested in jazz or classical playing, your teacher will guide you in that direction. The same goes for blues, pop, rock, country, and funk. You will learn the differences as well as the similarities between styles and genres.

Whatever your goals, our staff will help you reach them.

The Right Age to Start Guitar Lessons

One common questions parents have when considering guitar lessons for their child is about the age children should be before starting guitar lessons. This is a great question.

Playing the guitar takes a certain level of physical dexterity. Pressing down on strings to create chord patterns, fingerpicking, and plucking the strings takes a certain amount of muscular development and coordination in the hands. For that reason, very small hands won’t be effective at forming many chord patterns.

We do not recommend starting guitar study before the age of seven. Even then, not every seven year old is necessarily ready (physically, mentally, or perhaps musically) to begin guitar study. If you’re not sure whether your child is ready, contact us for a consultation. We can coach you on whether now is the right time to start, or whether waiting a year or two would lead to better results.

Of course, guitar instruction isn’t limited to young children. You’re never too old to begin! At Your Door Music is pleased to teach guitar students of any age (above 7, that is) and any level.

  • Elizabeth is very much enjoying her lessons. After a couple years of piano lessons at [another music school] she finds this so refreshingly fun and she really looks forward to her lessons. Consequently, she practices more and is having more fun. Dave has just the right combination of kindness and seriousness to teach her.

    E.P.
  • Your instructors really are friendly and enthusiastic. They’ve been great about working with my kids to find out what kind of music they want to play.

    A.A.
  • Aidan has gained a new lease on his musical life since enrolling with AYDM. I never have to remind him to practice. He just does it on his own without any prompting. In this busy household with four kids, that’s huge. His teacher has figured out Aidan’s music interests and taken it from there and that seems to have helped keep Aidan’s interest going. We’re very pleased.

    A.J.
  • Both my husband and I are in a service business and we continue to be very impressed with how you run AYDM. You are so attentive to detail and provide excellent service. Very impressive!

    B.K.

    K.J.
  • Our guitar teacher and drum teacher both have been so inspiring for my children. We feel lucky that teachers of this caliber come to the house. They’re professional yet the lessons are still so fun. Worth every penny.

    L.O.
  • Ben is charming and respectful and the luxury of having him come to us is just amazing. I can continue with my own work while listening to the lesson. He’s relaxed, cheerful and playful – it’s great.

    J.L.

  • At Your Door Music is simply the best music lesson option, bar none, in metro Boston. You have met and exceeded our expectations over the years with both of our children. On top of that you are perhaps the most professional organization I have ever dealt with for children’s activities & lessons. We will continue to recommend you and wish you every success!
