Frequently Asked Questions
Get StartedWhat’s a Good Age to Begin Guitar Lessons?
One common questions parents have when considering guitar lessons for their child is about the age children should be before starting guitar lessons. This is a great question.
Playing the guitar takes a certain level of physical dexterity. Pressing down on strings to create chord patterns, fingerpicking, and plucking the strings takes a certain amount of muscular development and coordination in the hands. For that reason, very small hands won’t be effective at forming many chord patterns.
We do not recommend starting guitar study before the age of seven. Even then, not every seven year old is necessarily ready (physically, mentally, or perhaps musically) to begin guitar study. If you’re not sure whether your child is ready, contact us for a consultation. We can coach you on whether now is the right time to start, or whether waiting a year or two would lead to better results.
Of course, guitar instruction isn’t limited to young children. You’re never too old to begin! At Your Door Music is pleased to teach guitar students of any age (above 7, that is) and any level.
Do I have to know how to read music?
No. Beginners are welcome! Our lesson plans aim to educate, engage and inspire students.
