5 Covers of “Feeling Good”
GET STARTEDLast week, we discussed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and how it’s sparked a variety of stunningly different covers. This week, we’ll do the same thing with “Feeling Good,” by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. This one goes further back than “Hallelujah,” and few people remember that it was originally from the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint. The covers of “Feeling Good” may be even more wide-ranging than the ones of “Hallelujah” and bear very little resemblance to the original song. Let’s take a look at the original, along with 5 covers of “Feeling Good.”
The Roar of the Greasepaint Version, 1964:
5 Covers of “Feeling Good”:
1. Nina Simone, 1965:
Nina’s unforgettable blues cover of “Feeling Good” was the first to stray from the original Broadway version and would inspire dozens of future covers.
2. Eels, 2000:
Years later (and plenty of covers later), the Eels recorded one of the more pared-down covers of “Feeling Good.” It just uses a simple piano accompaniment.
3. Muse, 2001:
When you listen to Muse’s cover of “Feeling Good,” it’s hard to believe that the song was originally from a Broadway musical. Muse’s vocally impeccable version firmly plants the song in the alternative rock genre.
4. Michael Buble, 2005:
Michael Buble’s cover is one of the most famous versions of “Feeling Good.” Like most of Buble’s songs, this one has a wonderfully nostalgic feel to it.
5. Carly Rose Sonenclar, 2012:
Carly Rose re-popularized “Feeling Good” for the younger, pop-craving crowd when she sang this beautiful version on the show X-Factor.
