About Spencer L.
Spencer is a professional guitarist, singer-songwriter, producer, and educator with over 23 years of performance experience in Austin. He teaches electric and acoustic guitar, as well as vocal performance, specializing in fingerpicking guitar, with a background in blues, folk, ragtime, and rock.
He began playing music on trumpet at 12, later as lead chair in his high school jazz and city bands, and performing trumpet in musical theater productions. In his teens, he joined rock bands as a lead singer and guitarist. Studying guitar under Austin teaching legend Trevor Helt, he went on to be the runner-up finalist at the Austin Blues Society International Blues Challenge (solo/duo) in 2017. With a career including session recordings with Jerry Jeff Walker, along with various performances for SXSW, Spencer is a seasoned performer and passionate advocate for our great Austin music community.
Spencer’s teaching approach focuses on “music muscle” training—building feel, rhythm, and confidence—teaching students whatever they want to learn most, while focusing on core fundamentals. Keeping the love of singing and strumming guitar alive for the next generation of rock stars, campfire jammers, and bedroom bands alike.
