About Kathryn Chamberlain

Kathryn’s interest in violin began after seeing her soon-to-be teacher perform with students at her preschool. Wide-eyed and amazed, all she could think was that the young violinists were the coolest people she had ever seen. As a result, she began expressing interest in playing the violin. After about a year of begging to learn, and playing the “violins” her mother would make for her out of tissue boxes, toilet paper rolls, and rubber bands with a ruler for a bow, she began her studies at age 5.

Having musicians as parents, Kathryn was very fortunate to be surrounded by and exposed to music. She fondly remembers the summers she would go to Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival with her mother to see her uncle play with the orchestra, as well as attending gigs where her parents would perform, seeing them teach, and also have the pleasure of collaborating musically with both of them.

At the age of 14, Kathryn was accepted into the Manhattan School of Music Precollege in New York City. After graduating the program she continued on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Violin Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where she studied with Grigory Kalinovsky.

She has the extensive orchestral experience, having sat as both section leader and concertmaster. As a soloist, she has participated in master classes with Joshua Bell, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Ani Kavafian, and Vadim Gluzman. She has also attended the Heifetz International Music Institute, Kneisel Hall, and Pinchas Zukerman’s Young Artists Program.

Kathryn’s passion for teaching began when she worked as an assistant instructor for her college professor Grigory Kalinovsky at Indiana University’s Summer String Academy where she taught for three consecutive summers.

She has adopted her former professor’s technique-based approach to teaching, which focuses on creating a beautiful sound through body awareness and healthy playing.

A New Jersey native, Kathryn resides in Austin, TX where she lives with her two cats, Sylus and Oliver. In her free time, she enjoys drawing and painting, interior design, and is also studying personal styling.
