About Fred K.
A native of Kankakee, Illinois, Fred graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Music Education. He began bass studies with Nancy McCain of Chicago Heights, and continued later studies with Harold Carnes and Warren Benfield, both of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Fred taught orchestra and band for thirty years in the public schools of Park Forest, Crete, and Flossmoor, Illinois; and in Richmond, Indiana before retiring in 2010.
Fred has served as principal bassist of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra for thirty four years, and has performed with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra for twenty six years. Fred has also played in the American Chamber Symphony, Chicago Heights Symphony, Kankakee Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Southwest Symphony, and Peoria Symphony.
As a conductor, Fred has led the Chicago Heights Symphony Orchestra and the Suburban Youth Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his playing, Fred currently serves as the manager of the Southwest Symphony and teaches private lessons at the Music Connection.
