Orland Park Bass Lessons

Our Approach to Bass Guitar Lessons

There are as many approaches to teaching music as there are music studios. Not every approach is right for every student. The Music Connection seeks to develop well-rounded musicians with solid fundamental skills, in a context that’s also fun and inspiring.

Below are three principles that guide our approach.

Bass Lessons Should Be Fun!

We all know the feeling: you hear your favorite song come on and you can’t resist the urge to play along on your air guitar! Here at The Music Connection, we can help you convert your musical fantasies into reality – while preserving that irresistible sense of joy you feel when playing along. We want each of our students to LOVE their musical experience with us!

Whether you come to us planning on becoming the next Flea or simply wanting to play songs around the campfire with your friends, our top-notch instructors will help you progress quickly toward your goals while ensuring you have fun along the way.

We Emphasize Healthy Technique

Regardless of your ultimate goals, our teachers will prioritize strong fundamentals including proper posture, hand positioning, chords, fretting, picking, and strumming. As students progress, these basics will become second nature – and serve as the foundation from which students can apply their skills across a variety of genres and styles.

We want our guitar students to be literate, well-rounded musicians. Beginners and seasoned performers alike will find value in our approach at The Music Connection, coupling technical instruction with elements of music theory and music history in each lesson.

We Care About Your Musical Interests & Goals

Your unique interests and background will help guide your experience at The Music Connection. We teach beginners, intermediate, and advanced students who are interested in a variety of styles – including rock, jazz, classical, pop, blues, and more. Whether you’re inspired by modern day singer-songwriters or the rockers of the 1970s, we can’t wait to get started with you!

Our seasoned instructors will draw upon years of playing, performing, and teaching experience to guide you in improving your skills and exploring the many possibilities of your instrument, and advancing toward your goals at a pace that works for you.

What’s the Right Age to Start Bass Guitar Lessons?

We often hear from parents who want to know what age a child should be before starting bass guitar lessons. Great question! We generally are happy to start students in music instruction around age 6, but the bass has some special considerations.

Playing the bass guitar is not especially complicated, but the physical dimensions of the instrument are a factor. Bass guitars are big and fairly heavy. Additionally, the heavy gauge of the strings (compared to smaller instruments like guitars or ukuleles) poses a challenge for small fingers with less developed muscles. And a student needs to be able to reach the end of the bass’s neck without straining.

For these reasons, we generally don’t recommend starting bass lessons until at least age eight or nine. It’s going to depend on a child’s physical development, too. If you’re not sure, we are happy to consult with you and help determine if your child is ready to start.

What Our Students and Parents Say

  • Hi Music Connection Friends,I just wanted to say thank you for all of those lessons you gave my children when they were younger. It’s truly a gift that lasts a lifetime. The best thing that has come out of this quarantine is that my kids remember they know how to play and they have been playing daily again. So lovely to hear them play and all that they learned. It is a gift they can enjoy forever.Miss you guys

We’ve been with The Music Connection since 2009.  The teachers we’ve had all have a genuine interest in kids’ learning and are excellent musicians themselves.  Mrs. K fosters an environment that makes music education important and fun.  She always puts students FIRST and will go out of her way to make sure they have opportunities to express their love of music.   It is a great studio with the best teachers.  We are lucky to have The Music Connection in our community!
