First piece of music that had a profound effect on me: We sang Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms in High School. The piece is in Latin and Hebrew and had such a dynamic combo of “classical” choir sound and really interesting, dissonant and provoking sounds for orchestra and voice. It was the hardest piece we had that semester but were all on-board to be as good as we could be. I remember being inside the wall of sound and really understanding on a deeper level why music is so important.
Music teacher who inspired me the most: My high school voice teacher, the great Annamarie F. Baskin became my den mother, confidant, adviser and friend. She pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to to get out of my head to free up my voice. She understood that lessons ask a lot of a student but expected us to master our material and learn theory along the way. With her I had an opportunity to perform in the community and that emphasis on performance readiness and presentation have become hallmarks of my own teaching.
How I am making the world a better place: I volunteer at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center rehabilitation wild species of Illinois, and at Animal House Shelter in Huntley in the cat room. I love and support everyone’s right to be their own person and believe in the twin powers of Kindness and Humor to save us all!
Favorite quote about music: “There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.” -Albert Schweitzer
