Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, and coming from a musical family, John Neenan began his first studies on guitar at the age of 6. Shortly afterwards he decided his passion lied in playing drums. He began taking lessons locally and studied through high school and college, eventually obtaining a scholarship where he was invited to study with Abraham Marcus of the NY Metropolitan Opera House. John received his Bachelor of Science degree in Music Composition from Empire State College, of the State University of New York, Saratoga Springs.
John had already been playing with local bands in his neighborhood, when they received a record contract to record original compositions at The Record Plant in New York City under the direction of Jack Douglass, of Aerosmith, John Lennon, and Cheap Trick fame. After completion of their first album, John was invited to become a studio musician backing up other great talents such as Cyndi Lauper, Peter Frampton, Bonnie Raitt, and Cheap Trick, and was recognized as one of the premier studio drummers on the East Coast of the United States. He continues to create and record original compositions that can be found on Reverb Nation under the name “Jay Neenan & Friends Original Music” which showcases original music which John has written, sung and played drums on himself, along with fellow musician friends.
John has been teaching music on every level beginning with drums, for more than 40 years. His true passion lies in educating young minds to the wonders and lifetime fulfillment of playing music. Recently hired by the Tampa School of Music, John has finally found his home. He has encountered young, eager minds and raw talent looking for direction. This position has been to date his most fulfilling, and he looks forward to a long and happy relationship with both the Tampa Music School and the students enrolled to study under his guidance.
