Have you always dreamed of driving the rhythm in a rock band or performing in a worship team? These types of groups and many others have one thing in common: a good drum player. Drums have been used for centuries to bring musicians together on the same beat. Many drum enthusiasts would love the opportunity to study this versatile instrument but just don’t know where to start.
Tampa Music School offers expert drum instruction, and we are well equipped to help you learn any style of your choosing. Let’s look at how it all works.
Our Approach to Drum Lessons
Our percussion instructors are adept at teaching many different styles of drumming, such as rock, metal, jazz, funk, blues and others. Whatever style you want to learn, we can teach it to you.
We always strive to make lesson time as convenient as possible for our students. There is no need for you to bring your own drum set as we have very efficient and compact models for studio use. The only supplies you will need to bring each week are a notebook and your sticks.
Additionally, we offer drum sets that have headphone capability. Our students appreciate the ability to be able to practice at home without noise disturbance to others.
Our facility is a welcoming place where you can get your creative juices flowing. Weekly lessons will be a time where you and your teacher work closely together to learn the wide range of skills needed to become a proficient drummer.
At Tampa Music School, we believe in developing the entire musician. The way to do this is to establish firm basics that apply to all music.
We Teach the Fundamentals
As you would expect, ability to understand rhythm and hold a steady beat is key if you want to become a proficient drummer. In addition, students will learn valuable lessons in relevant music theory and sight reading.
There is no need to take a class expressly in one of these disciplines. Your teacher will work this training in through repertoire choices during your lesson time.
We Teach Proper Technique
Accomplished drumming requires the mastery of a wide range of techniques such as posture, correct use of pedals and drum surfaces, beat patterns, rudiments, hand and foot coordination and stick holding position.
If this sounds like a lot, don’t worry! With consistent practice and your teacher’s patient help, these skills will soon be second nature. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and drummers don’t go pro overnight. Your skill will take time to build. Having a teacher work with you personally will enable you to make progress much faster than with self-study.
We Tailor Instruction to Your Goals
Right off the bat, your teacher would love to know where you want to go with your drum playing. Do you want to make marching band, form a rock group, or join a jazz ensemble? Although the beginning techniques of drumming are similar across most styles of performance, your end goal will greatly shape the manner in which your teacher instructs you. Different intermediate and advanced techniques are required for different performance styles.
If you’re not sure which area you would like to pursue and would like to focus on being as generally versatile as possible, we can do that too. Many students really enjoy getting a taste of several different musical options. Through this experimentation, some realize that they prefer a style they had never considered before. This challenge to discover is one of the most exciting aspects of teacher/student collaboration.

Our Drum Teachers
At Tampa Music School, it is our instructors that truly shine. Their accomplishments in the field of percussion are vast and impressive. High academic achievement is combined with high levels of professional experience. Our teachers have done everything from performing with iconic musicians such as Cindy Lauper to collaborating with the U.S. Air Force Academy Band.
What Is the Right Age to Begin Drum Lessons?
We understand that a child of any age can tap on a surface. The drum set has fewer physical limitations for young children than instruments like the guitar or piano. However, the capabilities that we look for in a beginning drum student are the ability to focus for longer periods of time and the ability to understand rhythms and notation. Many children as young as six are capable of handling beginning drum technique.
It’s not all about the kids either. Instructors at Tampa Music School thrive on working with students of all ages, including teens and adults. Any age is a great age to get started.
If you are interested in or have a child who is interested in private lessons, we would love to assess your or your child’s level of readiness.
