About Michael Mckissack

  • Mike was born and raised in the Chicagoland area, and has spent the last thirty years learning the intricacies of composing, performing, and teaching the guitar. He’s well versed in most contemporary styles of music, and is always on the lookout for new challenges to his playing. He has studied with a variety of musicians and has gained extensive stage and studio experience performing with a variety of Chicago-based bands.
  • In 1992, he was the winner of the “Chicago’s Finest Guitarist” competition, with sponsors that included Fender, Peavey, and Guitar Player Magazine. He was also featured in the “Spotlight” column in the April 1994 issue of Guitar World Magazine. In 1998, Mike–with his band SBS– won the Kool/H.O.R.D.E. competition hosted by the House of Blues. Boosted by a winning margin of more than 300% above the second place band, SBS played gigs on the HORDEFEST tour with acts such as Blues Traveler, Paula Cole, Government Mule, Bare Naked Ladies, and many others. SBS also released a self-titled CD on Rip Records.
  • Mike currently keeps busy teaching, doing session work, as well as composing and licensing his music for a broad range of advertising and media outlets. — Mike takes a flexible approach to teaching, balancing his instructions between the academic, technical, and creative aspects of music and the guitar. Although he likes to stay goal-oriented, he tailors his lessons to the goals and ability of each individual. Mike feels a friendly and relaxed atmosphere is most conducive to a positive learning experience and tries to make each student feel comfortable.
