Our drum instructors enjoy tailoring lessons to their students’ interests and goals, while incorporating the technical skills needed for them to achieve mastery of their instrument.

At Schaumburg Music Academy, we welcome drum students of all abilities and experience levels, and teach both adults and children above the age of 4. Our teachers meet their students where they are, creating a positive and inspiring learning environment for all. Below is a basic outline of our approach.

Our excellent teachers will help cultivate your talents as a percussionist. We have experienced teachers to help you learn and advance your drum talents. Are you considering drum lessons for yourself or your child in Schaumburg? Schaumburg Music Academy provides quality drum instruction to students of all ages and abilities  in the Schaumburg area.

Our teachers have the training and experience you’re looking for. Many of them are graduates of prestigious music programs including Berklee College of Music, and they are not only passionate but also versatile! Whatever style of music you’re interested in playing—from pop to jazz;  indie rock to hip-hop—we have instructors who will help you get there. Our approach to drum lessons is comprehensive, individualized and–above all–fun!  Whatever your goals, you’ll begin by learning proper technique and music fundamentals. These foundational skills are an essential part of becoming a well-rounded drummer and musician, and our teachers are adept at incorporating them into whatever repertoire interests you most.

Drum Lessons Should Be Fun!

Few things in life are more satisfying than sitting down at a set of drums and playing your heart out. Students will find this unbridled joy in drum lessons at Schaumburg Music Academy, as fun is the centerpiece of our teaching philosophy. We want our students to LOVE that feeling, whether it’s their first or five-hundredth time on the throne (and yes, it’s really called that!).

Whether your interest in the drums is currently an individual pursuit or you’re already part of a band or ensemble, Schaumburg Music Academy’s passionate instructors are ready to help you progress quickly toward your goals while having fun doing it!

We Emphasize Healthy Technique

Students at Schaumburg Music Academy can count on well-rounded instruction, rooted in proper technique. Working with a professional instructor, you will begin to master the fundamentals of drumming: a strong sense of pulse, how to control touch and tone, well-rounded drum vocabulary, ergonomic drum set configuration, good posture, healthy wrist action, four-limb independence, and efficient sticking patterns.

We strive to ensure that all of our drum students have a rich and varied lesson experience and become literate musicians. Students will be immersed in essential elements of music theory including rhythm and notation, and will gain exposure to the rich history of percussion.

In addition to focusing on technique, we strive to make sure that all of our students acquire the fundamentals necessary to become literate musicians. Students will become familiar with the many different styles of notation commonly used by percussionists, including standard music notation.

We Care About Your Musical Interests

Our teachers pride themselves on helping you discover new ways of connecting with the instrument while also working on music you know and love. The world of drumming is wide and deep – but through our tailored instruction, we help you reach your goals, whatever they may be.

Are you a member of a jazz ensemble? We’ll focus on swinging, dynamics, chart reading, and how to “kick” the band. Is your band hoping to be the next big country/rock/pop act? We’ll focus on playing with power, steady grooving, and bread-and-butter fills. Perhaps you desire to be a virtuosic drummer who can move in and out of all sorts of styles? We’ll help you identify the similarities and differences between them and navigate the precise skills needed for each.

Our Drum Teachers:

Our instructors are the most important part of Schaumburg Music Academy. Each one of our teachers is highly qualified, experienced, and versatile. In addition to our flexible curriculum and approach, their caliber is what sets us apart. Our drum instructors are not only talented, but also caring — facilitating your journey of musical self-discovery. Do you want to gain confidence and poise as a performer, learn to shred on drums, or just know when to add more cowbell? You never know what you can achieve until you take that first step.

Schaumburg Music Academy is happy to start teaching students ages four and up who are ready to begin their musical education. Usually physical development isn’t the limiting factor for drum lessons. Instead, it’s attention span. We’ve found that most motivated students can start studying drums at age six or seven, when they have developed the ability to focus for long enough periods. For younger students, starting with a piano lesson for one or two years can be a great way to begin their involvement in music and provides a fantastic head start if they choose to transition to drums at six or seven. We welcome adult students of any age and ability!

Ken Tan | Parent

“Both my kids have been drumming with Zach for more than a year and they are enjoying the learning process here. Zach and the other substitute teachers are attentive and good at keeping the boys interested. The classes are casual but effective. Zach even organized a drum recital last year and it was well-received by both the students and parents. The academy also organizes annual recitals which keep everyone engaged.”
