Riverdale Music Academy – Where Passion Meets Possibility

Founded in 2025 by lifelong music educator Maurel Thom, Riverdale Music Academy was built on the belief that great music education is about more than just learning notes—it’s about nurturing passion, creativity, and confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Maurel, a graduate of the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, brings over a decade of experience as an educator and arts administrator. After serving as director of The Modern Music Academy since 2018, he established Riverdale with a bold vision: to create a modern, inclusive space where students of all ages and skill levels feel empowered to explore music in meaningful, personal ways.

At Riverdale, we offer 45-minute private lessons (30 minutes for ages 9 and under) tailored to each student’s unique journey. Whether you’re four or seventy-four, our teaching goes beyond the classroom—connecting students to live performance opportunities, collaborative band programs, and a community-first approach that builds confidence on and off the stage.

From budding beginners to experienced players, our students are encouraged to become multi-instrumentalists, take creative risks, and form lifelong bonds through music. With early childhood classes, vocal training, and rock band programs currently in development, Riverdale is more than a school—it’s a growing musical family.

We’re proud to shape not only skilled musicians but also kind, confident individuals.  At Riverdale, we teach more than music—we help students of ALL ages build memories, friendships, and confidence that last a lifetime.
