About Luis Rangel

Luis Rangel was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and moved to Austin, Texas at the age of 8. His musical journey began at the age of 4 with violin lessons, which he later switched to guitar at 12. After being accepted into the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, he studied classical guitar performance under Adam Holzman for two years. During this time, Luis was a member of the University of Texas Undergraduate Guitar Quartet, which won 1st place in the University of Texas at Brownsville Ensemble Festival and Competition. He also participated in several UT ensembles such as bassist in jazz combos, tenor in the Concert Chorale choir, and the Hispanic Caribbean Ensemble, playing guitar, bass, conga, timbales, and voice.

Outside of his academic pursuits, Luis has played in various bands for over 12 years, including Food Group, a psych-rock shoegaze band, and the All Rhythms Ensemble, which focused on Latin-American music and Cuban sones.

In his free time, Luis enjoys spending time with his wife, Maritza, in their Austin home, cooking, playing video games, and creating covers of his favorite songs from cartoons and video games.

Luis believes that successful learning experiences involve making personal connections with both people and music. His approach emphasizes using those connections to inspire passion and excitement in anyone interested in learning music, with an emphasis on using the ear as the primary guide.
