Our Approach to Music Theory Lessons at Northwest School of Music
Have you ever wanted to understand music? Music Theory is the method by which musicians deconstruct their favorite pieces. Whether it’s learning how a harmony creates emotion, or why certain melodies are hummable – or even what harmonies and melodies are! – our music theory teachers are excited to show you the inner workings of music.
While focusing on foundational elements like reading music and learning terminology, our teachers also help students learn using songs they are familiar with. This includes movie theme music, popular songs on the radio, your favorite classical artist, etc. We tailor your lessons to what you are interested in!

Get StartedMusic Theory Lessons Should Be Fun!
We know that an interest in music theory may be what brings you to our school – but having fun is what keeps you coming back! Here at Northwest School of Music, our goal is for every student to LOVE their music lessons as they embark on a rewarding journey of progress and discovery. We put the “fun” in fundamentals!

Analysis Increases Appreciation
There’s no such thing as spending too much time with the music you love! Music Theory helps you break down what makes music tick, whether it be the chords to your favorite pop song or the themes of a classical concerto. This level of comprehension helps further appreciation for our favorite pieces of music. It’s not enough to know they’re great – now we know WHY they’re great!
We take pride in helping you further your goals in music. You’ll also be learning how to read sheet music, and can even learn techniques for music composition! Our qualified teachers will assist you in developing your musicianship in our well-rounded approach to fostering musical excellence.
We Care About Your Musical Interests
There is no one-size-fits-all method of theory instruction. Regardless of ability or prior experience, our teachers take an individualized approach to each of our students. Our process is underpinned by detailed individual assessments, a personalized learning plan, and one-on-one guidance throughout your musical journey.
While fundamentals are essential, our ultimate goal is to equip students to begin exploring their own personal musical style and interests. Your teacher will work with you to understand where you want to go, and craft a unique plan to get you there. Whether your style is classical or pop (or anything in between), Northwest School of Music helps students excel in their craft while encouraging the occasional step outside the comfort zone to try something new.
