The Science of Sound – Summer Program
GET STARTEDAttention all 4th – 8th graders!
New World Music Academy presents The Science of Sound
The Science of Sound is designed for children in 4th through 8th grades who are interested in science, music, and composition. It is created and run by Sadie Glass (MMus, BMusHons – Urbana-Champagne, Ill.). The class promises to ignite and inspire the imagination of all class participants.
Course Objectives: By studying the human ear and sound waves, students will begin this course learning how sound is made, how it travels and how we perceive it. Using Holst’s Planets as our main source, we will explore the scientific and mythological characteristics of the planets, as well as his composition.
After becoming “experts” on one planet from Holst’s symphonic work, each student group will work to develop their own composition in GarageBand, displaying their understanding of the planet through the sounds they choose. Once their composition is complete, we will create “oobleck” a combination of cornstarch and water, and see how it comes to life when it reacts to the music their group created.
Course Outcomes: Each student will take home their own MP3 of their group’s composition, a strong understanding of Holst’s Planet’s, their first experience of composition, GarageBand, and how sound waves affect “oobleck.”
