About Alec Woodruff
Alec has been playing and learning a variety of string instruments for 20 years now, starting on the viola in elementary school and continuing through college where he studied the viola at TX State under the guidance of Dr. Ames Asbell, and played in Texas State’s orchestra.
Today he is a member of the Central Texas Medical Orchestra — a non-profit orchestra benefiting various medical-related charities each season. In parallel to this classical training, Alec has also played guitar and bass as well as violin and viola in a variety of original bands and cover bands.
He plays and teaches guitar and bass as well as mandolin, music theory, and piano fundamentals. Alec is passionate about all kinds of different music and is a particularly big fan of progressive, bluegrass, heavy metal, pop and funk music. Alec is also a bassist/singer and bandleader for the group Velvet Jukebox, a party and wedding variety band specializing in dance and pop hits from about 50 years ago through modern day.
Alec also works as a session player, recording for other artists and gigging as a sub for various bands when needed — for example, you can sometimes catch Alec performing with Austin’s funk/soul group Honeymade when their usual bassist isn’t around, or with Oreja, a local progressive rock band.
