About Alec Woodruff
Alec is a multi-instrumentalist with a strings focus who has been playing a variety of string instruments for nearly 30 years. Starting on the viola in elementary school and continuing through college where he studied the viola at TX State under the guidance of Dr. Ames Asbell, Alec played in Texas State’s orchestra and is an alum of the Central Texas Medical Orchestra — a non-profit orchestra benefiting various medical-related charities each season.
In parallel to this classical training, Alec has also played guitar and bass as well as violin and viola in a variety of original bands and cover bands over the years as a performing/touring and recording artist. Today Alec plays guitar and violin in the orchestral progressive jazz fusion band “Big Sky Collective” led by pianist Braedon Avants.
Alec is passionate about all kinds of different music and is a particularly big fan of progressive, heavy metal, bluegrass, pop and funk music.
Alec also works as a session player, recording for other artists and gigging as a sub for various bands when needed — for example, you can sometimes catch him performing with Austin’s funk/soul group Honeymade when their usual bassist isn’t around, or with Elijah Zane band, Zach Carney or Oreja—a local progressive rock band. You can hear Alec’s bass, guitar and violin/viola recordings on records by Under The Rug, Jack Henry, Ryan Holley, and Mackenzie Jean.
