About John Hix
John Hix has been studying drum set and classical percussion since this age of six. Growing up in a very musical family helped push him into various opportunities allowing him to play all kinds of music.
When John was in high school, he performed in big band jazz, concert band, pit orchestra, marching band, percussion ensembles, jazz combos, touring performing arts groups, and various out of school bands. When he was a sophomore, he began teaching percussion and drum set to younger kids.
After high school, John spent time teaching and working at Hix Bros. Music in Batavia, IL. Here, he taught drum-set/percussion and began to teach ukulele as well. John then began his education on scholarship at Belmont University studying Commercial Music where he got to perform in several jazz groups and world drumming ensembles.
Additionally, he gigged with country and indie rock bands in the Nashville music scene. Due to COVID, John’s college education was put on hold. He returned to the Chicago area and is now playing and teaching consistently. John plays in worship bands for several churches and is currently gigging with a successful disco cover band. He has also recently taken a staff position as a battery coordinator for the Crystal Lake Thunder marching percussion ensemble.
More than anything, John loves teaching and sharing his passion for music with his students in a fun and exciting way. As Ringo Starr once said, “Drumming is my middle name.”
