What is your first musical memory?

It’s difficult to pin down a first musical memory because it’s always been part of my life, even before I started piano lessons at age nine or ten. But one thing that comes to mind is singing “The Farmer in the Dell” with my Mom and some of the other little girls in the neighborhood at my birthday party. I also loved listening to the Beethoven symphonies with my Dad.

What inspired you to become a music teacher?

There wasn’t an “aha, I want to be a music teacher” moment that I recall, but sharing music with others has always been a favorite activity, and helping others learn more about it is so gratifying. It helps me learn more as well because I have to keep practicing and reading to keep up with my students.

What practice tips and tricks do you have for Cappella Academy students?

Practice the tricky parts first before playing all the way through your pieces. Practicing a little every day is far better than trying to cram it all in just before your lesson. Try to learn music and styles you have never heard or have heard before but don’t really like. You can always say, “meh, I really don’t want to play this”or “I tried this and don’t like it” and move onto something else, but you don’t know until you try. You will learn from the experience so it’s not a waste of time.

What is the one thing you want your students to take away from their lessons with you?

Find a way to keep music in your life. Whether you play an instrument or sing or only listen to music, just find a way to do it. Life is better with music.
