We Emphasize Healthy Technique

Regardless of your ultimate goals, our teachers will prioritize strong fundamentals including proper posture, hand positioning, chords, fretting, picking, and strumming. — AJ, Parent

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the right age to start bass guitar lessons?

We often hear from parents who want to know what age a child should be before starting bass guitar lessons. Great question! We generally are happy to start students in music instruction around age 6, but the bass has some special considerations. Playing the bass guitar is not especially complicated, but the physical dimensions of the instrument are a factor. Bass guitars are big and fairly heavy. Additionally, the heavy gauge of the strings (compared to smaller instruments like guitars or ukuleles) poses a challenge for small fingers with less developed muscles. And a student needs to be able to reach the end of the bass’s neck without straining. For these reasons, we generally don’t recommend starting bass lessons until at least age eight or nine. It’s going to depend on a child’s physical development, too. If you’re not sure, we are happy to consult with you and help determine if your child is ready to start.

Do I have to know how to read music?

No. Beginners are welcome! Our lesson plans aim to educate, engage and inspire students.

What styles of bass can I learn?

One of the most valuable things we can offer as a music school is experience. We bring teachers from around the globe to speak to all different kinds of music. With such diverse backgrounds in bass, our teachers can support your exploration of any number of styles of music.

What materials will I need?

With personally customized lesson plans, every student will have unique materials to support their music education. Once you and your instructor have discussed your short and long term goals for music lessons, they will provide you with a complete list of tools, including books, online resources, and more.

We take a well-rounded approach to music instruction. Whatever your goals, we start by teaching proper technique and fundamentals, developing the student into a well-rounded bassist and musician. Bass guitars provide the rhythmic and harmonic backbone in many styles and can be found all over popular and commercial music. They’re essential in jazz combos, rock bands, funk groups, and countless other ensembles. And they hold their own in classical settings, with the deep resonance supporting orchestral pieces. Given the diverse roles of bass guitars, teaching approaches can vary widely.
