About Matthew Waterman
Available Fridays
Matthew Waterman is a musician, composer, and teacher from Bloomington, Indiana. Teaching trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium, and piano on Fridays, Matthew believes in treating all styles of music with respect, and fostering the irreplicable creativity of each student. Whether your goal is to play a classical concerto, improvise over a funk groove, or write your own songs, Matthew can help.
Matthew’s passion for music started with playing Pink Floyd on the piano and quickly led to a focus on jazz trombone. After completing his bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Matthew obtained a master’s degree in Composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. Matthew has written musical arrangements for KORK (the Norwegian Radio Orchestra), chamber groups from the Arctic Philharmonic, Hærens musikkorps (a Norwegian army band), and the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Orchestra.
In 2019, Matthew participated in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead, a two-week residency at the Kennedy Center for young jazz performer-composers from around the world. Since 2021, Matthew has been based in Washington, DC. He looks forward to the August 2023 debut release For Flowers Yet to Bloom by Finding Frances, a quasi-indie rock band Matthew formed with friends from Indiana University. Some of Matthew’s music can be found on Soundcloud.
