About John Wenger

Available Tuesdays and Wednesdays

John Wenger has been playing cello for over 20 years. He grew up studying with Grace Field and David Peshlakai in Kalamazoo, MI, where he lived until moving to DC in 2018. An avid chamber and orchestral musician, John has performed with countless groups including the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony, the Kalamazoo Symphony, the Kalamazoo Philharmonia, the Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus, the Nova Symphony, and is one of the founding members of the Grace Notes Cello Octet.

He started teaching as a supplement to his studies, and has worked with students of various ages, from 8-63. His teaching philosophy follows the Suzuki Method, emphasizing aural proficiency and solid technique as the essential building blocks of good music-making.

John also has an acute interest in orchestral conducting, having led multiple ensembles of various sizes in rehearsal and concert, including the Kalamazoo Philharmonia and the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra. His interest in making great music with others informs his teaching practices, as he enjoys working with students to identify their musical goals, and helping along their path toward success.
