About John Vitullo
John graduated from Youngstown State University with a B.M. in Percussion Performance.
I believe in an approach that emphasizes technical exercise and musicality. Students are successful when they are given guidance specific to their development needs rather than just busy work. I want my students to take the lessons they learn with me and adapt them in a way that works for them. I encourage my students to have a wide variety of musical tastes and to always be expanding their horizons as this improves their ear.
At Youngstown State University, John served as section leader and principle percussion of the Wind Ensemble and performed at Carnegie Hall in 2015. He was also drum set player for the YSU Pep Band and Vibraphonist in various jazz combos. John was a founding member of the fusion band Cosmic Lemons, recording an album of original music and going on a mid-west regional tour with them. In addition, he has recorded tracks for the indie/alternative band Northern Whale and singer/songwriter Sarah Donkin.
During his time at YSU, he had experience teaching various ensembles including the Marching Pride Drumline, Percussion Ensemble, Liberty High School Drumline, and Youth Orchestra Percussion Section. Following graduation, John continued teaching at Liberty High School as Assistant Band Director. He was also a teacher for Students Motivated by the Arts, a nonprofit community arts school. There he facilitated drum circles for after school programs.
