What supplies do we need for our music lesson?

A simple guide for finding the right supplies for each instrument.

What supplies each student will need for his or her lesson will depend on the instrument they are taking lessons. Each instrument has specific needs and items to ensure each lesson will go smoothly. Students will need the instrument they are learning and supplies to properly progress.

Piano lessons do not require a full up-right piano.

• A 54 key keyboard or above will work perfectly fine (Most use a 61 key keyboard). 90% of all of our piano students take piano lessons on keyboards with the same progress of students who have an upright piano.
• The keyboard will need a keyboard stand to raise it to standing or sitting height.
• A keyboard petal will be needed for learning to play the piano. The pedal will create slurs needed to perform musical tasks from reading sheet music. Most keyboards come with this item but always be sure to check to see if this item is included.
• Also make sure that there is some form of a music stand. If the keyboard does not have a built in or snap in music holder/stand, the student will need a music stand. Portable, fold-able music stands average $20 in price and can be found in any common music store or online.
• Students will also need a place to sit. You can purchase a portable piano bench to match your keyboard and stand or you may use a a chair in your home. If you do use a household chair, be sure to make sure the student can sit in the chair at a comfortable level to play on the keys.

Guitar lessons can be taught on either and electric or acoustic guitar.

• Students will need a music stand for charts, music, and tablature. Any type of stand will do.
• Guitar picks will be needed for strumming and for picking notes.
• A capo will be needed to change the key of music the student will be playing.
• A tuner is a great item for lessons. Students will learn to tune their guitar during their sessions and the best brand to purchase is a Snark^TM. They average $20 in price and can be purchased at Guitar Center, online, or any well established retail guitar provider.
• A guitar strap will also be needed to support the instrument for the student to stand and play. They come in various colors and are a great way to accentuate the player’s style and personality!

Bass lessons are similar to guitar lessons but the lessons will have different needs.

• A tuner is a great item for lessons. Students will learn to tune their guitar during their sessions and the best brand to purchase is a Snark^TM. They average $20 in price and can be purchased at Guitar Center, online, or any well established retail guitar provider.
• A bass strap will also be needed to support the instrument for the student to stand and play. They come in various colors and are a great way to accentuate the player’s style and personality!Students will need a music stand for charts, music, and tablature. Any type of stand will do.

Drum lessons mainly require the drum kit student will utilize.

• Drum sticks will be needed to strike each drum pad. We recommend purchasing more than one set just in case one stick breaks or one gets misplaced.

Viola lessons

• Rosin will needed to rosin the bow to produce a sound. Viola students will need an amber colored rosin.
• Viola students will also need a tuner.
• A music stand will bee needed to hold the music for the student to see.

Cello lessons

• Rosin will needed to rosin the bow to produce a sound. Cello students will need an green colored rosin.
• Cello students will also need a tuner.
• A music stand will bee needed to hold the music for the student to see.
• Students will need a cello stop/end pin rest. This will keep the cello from sliding as the student plays, creating a sturdy foundation. There are two types, a circular rubber stop and the type that straps to students chair. Either will be effective to its purpose.

Flute lessons

• Flute students will need a music stand.
