At Hix Brothers Music School, we teach a variety of brass instruments – including trumpet, tuba, french horn, and trombone – each of which plays a critical role in bringing to life the music we know and love.

We Emphasize Healthy Technique
We believe mastery of fundamentals is key to providing a strong foundation for a musician’s growth. At Hix Brothers Music School, you’ll learn the key elements of strong brass technique including breath support, voicing, embouchure, articulation, finger technique, and posture. Understanding these necessities will help you maintain control of the tone and quality of your music.

Mark Baldin joined the Rockford Symphony Orchestra in 1980 and has held the position of Principal Trumpet since 1984, One of the RSO’s most visible and popular players, he has frequently soloed with the orchestra and served as narrator and Master of Ceremonies for many of their special events.

What is the minimum age to begin brass lessons at Hix Brothers Music School?
Anyone can learn to play an instrument, but there are certain elements that lend themselves to more successful adoption of a new skill. When it comes to brass instruments, it’s important to not only have solid reading and comprehension skills to be successful but also have significant lung capacity. We begin brass lessons for the trumpet, trombone at the age of five. At this point, we’ve found that students have the necessary skills to acquire the knowledge that will support playing an instrument.
Do I need any prior experience?
Brass instruments are complicated, but with the right support, anyone can learn to play the trumpet, trombone, french horn, and more. There’s no need to be nervous about getting started or striving for an ambitious goal – we welcome musicians of all backgrounds and skill levels.
What styles of music can I learn?
Because our teachers have such unique experiences to share with our students, there are no limits to the styles of brass music that we can teach. Whatever style of music you may be interested in, our brass teachers can guide you through an insightful and empowering journey of music education.
