About Steven Madonia
Steven Madonia is a music educator who completed his undergraduate studies at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music and his graduate studies at SUNY University at Buffalo. He has conducted and organized several concerts, held seating auditions for competitive youth groups, and worked with grade levels K-12 in both general music and orchestral conducting. Steven currently teaches cello, violin, viola, and piano.
Over the years, Steven has played in both Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, as well as performed under the batons of prestigious conductors such as Duain Wolfe, Joseph Flummerfelt, and JoAnn Falletta. He has been active in chamber music throughout his entire high school and college career, participating in all-county festivals, masterclasses, and recitals often. Other groups he has performed with include, but are not limited to, the Dowling College Symphony, Gemini Youth Orchestra, and the West Islip Symphony Orchestra. Steven has been performing for shelters and educational centers since high school, using these opportunities to promote music and build a sense of community.
In 2017, he became a member of the national string project. In 2018, he received an award from the AHRC Seiff Educare Center for presenting music through performance to physically and mentally disabled students. In 2019, he joined Gordon’s Institute for Music Learning and the Steinway Educational Program.
When teaching, Steven aims to increase musical comprehension in theory and ear training so that students can not only just read music but also deeply understand how it works. He is also trained in the Alexander Technique, which he uses as a main staple of his educational approach. This technique guides his students to release negative tension and create mind-body connections so that they may experience greater control when striving for artistic expression. He feels this helps his students not only in performance but also in navigating the stress of life.
Ultimately, Steven aims to see all of his students achieve personal and professional growth through the expression of the arts.
