Welcome to the latest edition of the Flatts and Sharpe Newsletter, where we share the coolest stories, shining up and coming talents, our wonderful staff and delightful finds in the world of music. We always have fun events happening whether it be student recitals, all ages and adult student rock shows, in store concerts at our Rogers Park location and so much more. Of course we need to mention all of the cool repairs and new/used merch that passes through our doors as well!
On May 17th, our incredible students and teachers took the stage at Sketchbook Brewery for an unforgettable night of music! This Rock Show was a smashing success, featuring some of the most advanced and polished student bands we’ve ever had the pleasure of watching perform. The evening kicked off with a high-energy set from our teacher band, opening the show with powerful renditions of “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence and “Ain’t It Fun” by Paramore. The excitement carried on with five student bands lighting up the stage, each bringing their own style, skill, and stage presence to the spotlight. We’re so proud of the hard work and talent these students showcased, and it was an incredible reminder of how strong and vibrant our Flatts & Sharpe community truly is. We’re proud to recognize Jim R. as our Rogers Park Student of the Month! Jim has been a part of the Flatts & Sharpe community since 2023 and recently began studying voice with Katie Wheeler earlier this year. In just a short time, he’s made tremendous strides in developing his vocal technique, with a particular focus on breath support, open vowels, and working toward full breath control. Jim’s lessons often center around jazz standards — a favorite genre of his — and he’s currently putting his personal touch on the classic “Autumn Leaves.” Outside of lessons, Jim recently performed with the choir at his synagogue, further reflecting his commitment to sharing his love of music with others. Katie notes that Jim’s curiosity, enthusiasm, and steady consistency set him apart from other adult students, allowing him to progress quickly and embrace new challenges with confidence. We’re so excited to celebrate Jim’s accomplishments and can’t wait to hear what he’ll sing next!

We’re excited to spotlight Amelia T. as our Norwood Park Student of the Month! A dedicated violin student studying under Cathie, Amelia has shown incredible progress and musicality in a remarkably short time. Less than two months after beginning lessons, she took the stage at our spring recital to perform “Ode to Joy,” impressing everyone with her poise and beautiful tone. Cathie shares that Amelia has had a natural ear for intonation from her very first lesson, consistently playing with impressive accuracy and musical sensitivity. In addition to her work on violin, Amelia is also a pianist and hopes to one day turn her love of classical music into a spot in a symphony or orchestra. She approaches every lesson with joy, enthusiasm, and a sincere eagerness to work hard and refine her technique. Amelia’s passion for music and positive spirit are an inspiration to her fellow students and teachers alike — we can’t wait to see where her musical journey takes her next!
