Quick Tips for Navigating a Last-Minute Performance

Have you ever found yourself unexpectedly in the spotlight? Maybe you were called in for an audition with just a few days’ notice, or perhaps you were asked to sing a solo in a concert. These kinds of moments can feel overwhelming for any musician. But with the right mindset and preparation, you can face these challenges head-on.

Stay Calm

The first step to overcoming fear is to stay calm. This may sound easier said than done, but there are techniques that can help you manage your nerves:

  • Take deep breaths. Inhale slowly for four counts, hold for four counts, then exhale for four counts. Repeat this a few times to slow your heart rate and clear your mind.
  • Visualize success. Picture yourself performing confidently and with ease. This mental exercise can help shift your focus away from anxiety.
  • Focus on the music. Instead of dwelling on what could go wrong, connect with the piece you’re performing. Immerse yourself in the story or emotion of the music, and your nerves will often take a backseat.

Be Prepared

Preparation is key to building confidence. Even if you have limited time, there are steps you can take to make the most of it:

  • Prioritize the difficult areas. Identify the most challenging sections of your music and focus on those first.
  • Use smart practice techniques. Practice in short, focused bursts and vary your methods. For example, sing slower tempos or try starting from different sections of the piece.
  • Record yourself. Listening to your performance can help you spot areas for improvement and boost your confidence as you hear your progress.

Smile 🙂

It may sound simple, but smiling can be a powerful tool. Smiling not only helps you feel more relaxed but also conveys confidence to your audience. Even if you’re nervous, a genuine smile can calm your nerves and help you connect with listeners.

My Story: Last Minute Audition

I once received a call to audition for a music program just five days before the big day. With limited time to prepare, I focused on the essentials: singing through my piece with consistent technique, i.e. breathing in the same spots, correct pronunciation and good tone. I made sure to pick a piece I was already familiar with to make all of the practicing easier as well. When the audition arrived, I reminded myself to smile and connect with the piece. The nerves were still there, but they no longer controlled me. I walked away feeling proud of my performance — and I got in!

Facing these high-pressure moments can be tough, but remember that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. By staying calm, preparing wisely, and smiling through it all, you can turn fear into confidence.
