What is your first musical memory?

I grew up surrounded by music from a variety of genres; my mom is a musician and my first musical memory is listening to her play the piano at home. Music has always been a source of joy and wonder from the very beginning!

What inspired you to become a music teacher?

My first cello and piano teachers! When I was 10 years old, I drew a picture of my future self as a cello teacher; now I hope to inspire my students as my teachers inspired me!

What practice tips and tricks do you have for Cappella Academy students?

• Practice a difficult section 3x; no more, no less! Do this every day, and you will definitely see substantial progress. For more advanced students, try to practice a tough spot up to five times. Try to work on a specific aspect each time; notes, rhythm, flow, etc.
• Reward yourself! If you completed focused practice, play a favorite song, listen to your favorite artist, or make a “wish list” of songs you’d like to learn!
• Listen, listen, listen! This is one of the best ways to learn and become familiar with how music works; pick songs from a variety of genres and styles.

What is the one thing you want your students to take away from their lessons with you?

I hope my students discover the joy of studying music, and are inspired with the satisfaction of learning new skills!

Welcome Our New Instructor!

Mr. Hunter
Voice/Piano/Guitar/Bass

Mr. Hunter grew up on the forested outskirts of Bellingham, WA and began tickling the ivories at age 7. Joining swing choir in high school convinced him to pursue music professionally, and his performing background now encompasses choral, a cappella, jazz, funk, folk, metal and more! After earning his B.A. in Music Composition from Whitman College, he served two years through AmeriCorps as a classroom teacher for preschool-8th, simultaneously working as a private lessons instructor. A longtime music student himself, he knows firsthand the value of both structure and creative freedom and commits to finding the right approach for each individual.

Currently, Mr. Hunter performs with local pop-rock band 48 Degrees North and directs the (virtual) choir of Tacoma’s Grace Baptist Church. Apart from music, he is an avid outdoorsman, having logged 1000+ trail miles in some of the wildest country in the continental U.S.
