Ask a Cappella Teacher!

Ms. McKenzie-Guitar/Piano/Ukulele

What is your first musical memory?

I remember playing a Middle C song on my keyboard when I was a kid. It was so fun to be actually reading notes!

What inspired you to become a music teacher?

I loved taking music lessons and I wanted to be able to pay it forward and bring students the joy of making music. It’s very rewarding to teach music and see all the wonderful progress that students make!

What practice tips and tricks do you have for Cappella Academy students?

1. Play your instrument every day. Even if it’s just five minutes.

2. Start your practice with a song that you have been playing for a long time – it’s a lot of fun to play songs you are really comfortable with.

3. When you’re practicing, relax your hands, and focus on how the music is going to sound—even before you play it.

What is the one thing you want your students to take away from their lessons with you?

The music you play is yours; while you improve your skills, personalize it with your special enthusiasm and you’ll create amazing music!

Cappella Spotlight on the Violin

What will I learn in my violin lessons?

With a comprehensive curriculum of both traditional and classical approaches, our violin teachers teach a variety of styles from classical to popular to bluegrass and beyond.

Beginner violin students start with the fundamentals, such as learning the names of the notes and reading music, proper bow hold, and finger placement.

Our Bonney Lake and Tacoma violin teachers also place an emphasis on listening skills to learn to play by ear using the Suzuki method.

More experienced students continue to progress by learning advanced techniques such as vibrato and harmonics, especially through significant repertoire.

You can start lessons as early as this week! We have open enrollment, and lessons are first come, first serve! We are currently 99% full, so call or email us today to secure your lesson spot!
