What Does it Cost to Take Dance Classes?

For many children, dance is pure magic! They may picture themselves as a sparkling ballerina fairy, a fast-moving tapper, or a grooving hip hop artist. If your child has been begging for dance lessons, you might be wondering what it will cost to make their dream a reality.

The good news is that any amount you invest in your child will return dividends! The benefits of dance—including boosted confidence, new skills, increased physical fitness, lifelong friendships, and more—will prove to be lasting advantages in life.

In this guide, we explain what to expect when it comes to investing in a dance education.

There are a few basic financial costs to consider when signing your child up for dance lessons. These considerations are:

  • Tuition
  • Enrollment or membership fees
  • Proper clothing and shoes
  • Performance-related fees

Let’s take a closer look at each one!

Tuition

Private dance studios, community centers, nonprofits, and performing arts schools will all have tuition costs associated with dance classes. Depending on the organization, tuition may be determined per class, per month, per semester, or per year.

Tuition helps cover the cost of producing each class, such as teachers’ wages, insurance, and music licensing fees. Tuition prices will vary considerably depending on the institution, geographical location, and marketplace.

An important thing to remember is not to judge a dance program only by its price. Quality matters!

Enrollment or Membership Fees

These fees typically ensure that your dancer is continuously enrolled in class and that you will receive proper communications from the studio’s customer software management systems, such as email newsletters or text reminders.

Membership fees may also help cover safety or training costs, such as ensuring staff are CPR certified and properly educated in the studio’s curriculum.

Proper Clothing and Shoes

Most dance programs require adherence to a specific dress code. It is common for parents to purchase dress code items once or twice per year, depending on how fast their child grows.

Dress code items may include a leotard or unitard, tights or leggings, and appropriate shoes for the genre your child is enrolled in. Remember that all dance clothing should fit properly; do not try to gain longevity in items by leaving “room to grow,” which could result in a safety hazard.

Performance-Related Fees

An annual or biannual performance opportunity is common for students in dance classes. At dance studios, these are commonly known as “recitals,” “showcases,” or holiday shows, such as The Nutcracker. There may be fees associated with these productions, such as a costume purchase or costume rental, participation fees to cover the costs of producing the performance, and tickets.

As your child studies dance, there may be other costs you encounter over time, such as private lesson fees, competition fees, or travel expenditures. But keep in mind that these related opportunities may not be necessary for your child to have a life-changing experience! They are simply additional ways for your child to explore dance as they expand their skills and commitment.

Dance, like all childhood activities, requires an investment of many things: time, energy, money, effort … sometimes even carpooling! Its benefits, however, are priceless. It’s up to you to determine how much it is worth to have your child experience the joy and personal growth of dance!
