Bass guitar is an instrument that’s foundational to just about every band, whether it’s rock, pop, jazz or gospel. That makes it an indispensable ensemble instrument that many desire to learn. There are as many approaches to teaching music as there are music studios. Not every approach is right for every student. At Your Door Music seeks to develop well-rounded musicians with solid fundamental skills, in a context that’s also fun and inspiring.
Below are three principles that guide our approach.
We Teach Proper Technique
One thing that’s true of both guitar and bass guitar is that the basic technique of playing the instrument correctly is the same regardless of style or genre. It’s no surprise, then, that we start with teaching proper bass guitar playing technique.
No matter your goals, you need to master proper technique, including:
- Proper posture while holding the bass
- Proper plucking technique
- Proper left hand position
- Standard positions and approaches to fretting
Learning proper technique from an experienced teacher provides many advantages, including reduced incidence of injury and improved technical proficiency. Cultivating good playing habits will also help you progress faster on the instrument.
Start your playing career off right by studying with one our experienced bass guitar instructors from At Your Door Music.
We Teach the Fundamentals
At Your Door Music doesn’t stop with good technique. We believe that the best musicians are well-rounded musicians, and that’s why we teach all our students the fundamentals of music.
As a student with At Your Door Music, you’ll learn the basics of music theory, music literacy, rhythm instruction, music history, sight reading and more, and you’ll be a better, more versatile musician because of it. Learning music fundamentals will also make it easier if you decide to add another instrument down the road.
As a part of learning the fundamentals, you’ll learn the basics of reading music, with a focus on the forms of notation bassists most often encounter.
We Tailor Instruction to Your Goals
As mentioned above, we start all our beginning bass guitar students in the same place (that is, with a focus on proper technique and music fundamentals). That’s because you need that foundation no matter what your end goals are. But that’s just the beginning. As you progress past the basics of bass guitar, we will tailor your instruction to your musical goals.
Once you reach a certain level of proficiency, it’s time to consider your long-term goals. Do you want to focus on jazz bass? Then we’ll tailor your instruction to the skills that are most common in that genre. We’ll do the same for any other genre(s) you might wish to pursue.
If you’re not sure which genre to pursue yet, that’s OK. We can continue down a general path of instruction, developing you into a well-rounded player. As you develop interest or discover opportunities, we can pivot into instruction in a specific style or genre at any point.
Maybe you have your sights set even higher. Do you want to become a studio-level technician, someone who is proficient in every style and who has a deep, innate understanding of what the bass guitar can do? We will guide you there, with a lot of focus and hard work. Or if you want to become a true stage performer, we’ll work with you on a higher level of stage presence and ensemble playing.
Wherever you want to end up in your bass playing career, At Your door Music can help you get there.
What’s the Right Age to Start Bass Guitar Lessons?
We often hear from parents who want to know what age a child should be before starting bass guitar lessons. Great question! We generally are happy to start students in music instruction around age 6, but the bass has some special considerations.
Playing the bass guitar is not especially complicated, but the physical dimensions of the instrument are a factor. Bass guitars are big and fairly heavy. Additionally, the heavy gauge of the strings (compared to smaller instruments like guitars or ukuleles) poses a challenge for small fingers with less developed muscles. And a student needs to be able to reach the end of the bass’s neck without straining.
For these reasons, we generally don’t recommend starting bass lessons until at least age eight or nine. It’s going to depend on a child’s physical development, too. If you’re not sure, we are happy to consult with you and help determine if your child is ready to start.

Your instructors really are friendly and enthusiastic. They’ve been great about working with my kids to find out what kind of music they want to play.A.A.
Aidan has gained a new lease on his musical life since enrolling with AYDM. I never have to remind him to practice. He just does it on his own without any prompting. In this busy household with four kids, that’s huge. His teacher has figured out Aidan’s music interests and taken it from there and that seems to have helped keep Aidan’s interest going. We’re very pleased.A.J.
